USPA NEWS - The new Government announced on November 20 lasted just over a month for the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez. Sanchez, announced this Friday in a public appearance the appointment of Carlos Corpus as the new Minister of Economy, Commerce and Business, replacing Nadia Calviño, future president of the European Investment Bank (EIB). The new head of Economy will be in charge of directing the economic policy of the Executive and will preside over the Government Delegate Commission for Economic Affairs (CDGAE).
Likewise, the Minister of Finance, Maria Jesus Montero, will be the new first vice president of the Government, which implies the disappearance of the fourth Vice Presidency. And the Minister of Digital Transformation, Jose Luis Escriva, will assume the Secretary of State for Public Function, which until now depended on the Ministry of Finance. In this way, Escriva will head the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service.
The President of the Government highlighted the "solvency and honesty" of Carlos Corpus as the traits that define his career and expressed his conviction that he "will brilliantly give continuity and depth to the exceptional work done by Nadia Calviño." Trained at the University of Extremadura and in prestigious international centers, Carlos Body is a doctor in Economics and a State Commercial Technician, and until now he was Secretary General of the Treasury and International Financing of the Ministry of Economy.
"He is a young professional, but with proven competence, and a public servant with an exemplary career within the Administration," stressed Pedro Sanchez, who added that he assumes responsibility for a key government ministry, "an economist of enormous prestige both at the national level, as well as in the European institutions and in the multilateral financial organizations".
In this sense, Sanchez highlighted that the new minister is a "deep connoisseur" of Public Administration and economic policy, after his management experience, largely within the department that he begins to direct. "He is a convinced Europeanist, an honest professional with no other servitude than public service and with no other agenda than being useful to his country," added the Prime Minister.
Maria Jesus Montero, new first vice president
Within the remodeling of the Government, María Jesus Montero becomes the first vice president, in addition to maintaining the Treasury portfolio. The Prime Minister valued the "intense and brilliant work" carried out by Maria Jesus Montero in the Ministry of Finance since she joined the Government in June 2018, contributing decisively to the economic achievements and the reinforcement of the compatible welfare state with fiscal consolidation policies.
Sanchez wanted to have a few words of gratitude for Nadia Calviño, highlighting her "solvency and honesty" as her main traits since she joined the Government in 2018. Calviño will leave the Government after obtaining the support of the Ministers of Economy and Finance of the European Union to occupy the European Investment Bank (EIB). With this appointment "Spain and Europe gain a Europeanist at heart who will be on the board of directors of the largest multilateral financial institution in the world," Sanchez celebrated.
This is an appointment of "enormous relevance" because it reinforces the presence and influence of Spain at the core of the European project, which adds to that of Josep Borrell as vice president of the European Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security. Furthermore, Pedro Sanchez highlighted that Nadia Calviño will become the first woman, a "convinced feminist", to preside over the EIB after 65 years of the institution's history.
"This appointment does justice to the exceptional career of Nadia Calviño at the head of the Government's economic policy in a time of enormous complexity," said Pedro Sanchez in reference to a time "full of unprecedented threats and challenges that we have been able to overcome with agreement, as confirmed by the main indicators".
